Bangladesh and the Republic of Korea are shifting their bilateral ties from traditional development assistance to a comprehensive economic partnership. Led by the Minister of Finance and Planning, a high-level Bangladeshi delegation is currently in Seoul to secure deeper cooperation spanning artificial intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, and institutional investment.
While reviewing the ongoing $3 billion Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) framework for 2023–2027—which covers key infrastructure like the Dhaka MRT Line-5 Southern Route—the discussions underscored a strong push to move beyond concessional finance.
Key Highlights of the Seoul Engagements:
● Artificial Intelligence & Digital Hub: Talks with LG AI Research and FuriosaAI centered on developing a culturally and linguistically relevant Bangladeshi Large Language Model (LLM), advancing high-value AI ecosystems, and exploring AI-embedded infrastructure projects.
● Institutional Investment & Sovereign Fund: Discussions with the Korea Investment Corporation (KIC) explored mobilizing institutional capital through a proposed $1–2 billion Bangladesh Sovereign Fund to finance infrastructure, renewable energy, and digital hubs.
● Expanding Private Sector Partnerships: Major Korean conglomerates, including Samsung C&T, expressed intent to transition from traditional EPC contracting to long-term investment, public-private partnerships (PPPs), and utility-scale solar projects.
● Industrial Integration: At a business roundtable hosted by Youngone, Bangladesh called for closer joint ventures, technology transfer, and the integration of local suppliers into broader Korean value chains.
Both nations have agreed to maintain regular consultations to translate these high-level strategic talks into concrete investment projects and mutually beneficial economic outcomes.
